SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 949
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
join citizens across the state in celebrating May 5, 2007, as
Carroll Shelby Day in Texas; and
       WHEREAS, A native Texan born in Leesburg, Carroll Shelby
is one of the auto industry's greatest legends; his career as a
driver, owner, team manager, manufacturer, and consultant has
spanned more than 50 years; and
       WHEREAS, Early in Mr. Shelby's career, his accomplishments
included breaking land speed records at Bonneville in 1954 and
winning the 24-hour Le Mans in 1959; when health problems forced
him to give up racing, he turned his attention to design with a
vision of creating a race car made from a lightweight European
chassis using American V8 power; and
       WHEREAS, This vision led to the legendary Shelby Cobra, one
of the fastest road cars ever built; the Cobras and the Shelby
Mustangs he built for Ford in the 1960s made Carroll Shelby even
more famous; and
       WHEREAS, In 1991, he created the Carroll Shelby Children's
Foundation, dedicated to providing assistance for acute coronary
and kidney care for children in need; in 1992, he was inducted
into the Automotive Hall of Fame; and
       WHEREAS, Carroll Shelby will be honored at the 12th
anniversary of Keels and Wheels Concours d' Elegance at the
Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook; he is truly deserving of
recognition for his outstanding career and the positive impact
he has had on the world of racing and automobile design; now,
therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Carroll Shelby on his
exceptional career and extend to him best wishes in all his
future endeavors; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
