SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 950
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
honor the contributions of the valiant women who served in uniform |
|
and on the home front during World War II; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Several hundred thousand women served in the |
|
armed forces during World War II in the Army, the Coast Guard, the |
|
Marines, and the Naval Reserve; the women's auxiliary forces were |
|
usually known by their acronyms: the Women's Army Corps (WACs), |
|
the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), the Women's Air |
|
Service Pilots (WASPs), the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency |
|
Service (WAVES), and the SPARS, the women's auxiliary unit of the |
|
Coast Guard named after the Coast Guard motto, Semper Paratus; |
|
the 20,000 women Marines, who were not known by an acronym, |
|
underwent a tough training course that introduced them to all |
|
aspects of combat, including firing antiaircraft guns and jumping |
|
from parachute towers; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Women in the military served as nurses and |
|
secretaries and worked in such varied specialties as cartography, |
|
computing, motor mechanics, weather forecasting, photography, |
|
dog and pigeon training, radio and telephone operating, and |
|
translating; through their courage, dedication, and hard work, |
|
more than a quarter of a million American servicewomen made a |
|
significant contribution to the success of military operations; |
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Not all of the women who participated in the war |
|
effort during World War II were in the military; inspired by the |
|
image of Rosie the Riveter, who became a cultural icon, more than |
|
six million women stepped forward to work in industries that |
|
produced the ships, airplanes, tanks, trucks, guns, and ammunition |
|
that were crucial in achieving an Allied victory; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Women with the Salvation Army provided a wide array |
|
of services ranging from supplying doughnuts to providing nursing |
|
skills; the United Service Organizations, universally known as |
|
the USO, sent women performers to all of the military theaters, |
|
and women in the Red Cross provided support for the troops by |
|
operating field canteens and helping to arrange emergency |
|
leaves; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Women volunteers with the Young Men's Christian |
|
Association spent countless hours helping servicemen and |
|
servicewomen; the Cadet Nurse Corps trained young student nurses |
|
for active duty with the military, and the women of the American |
|
Legion Auxiliary visited veterans' hospitals, where they rolled |
|
bandages and distributed gifts, greeting cards, stationery, and |
|
playing cards; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Many civilian women ran service clubs, craft shops, |
|
and libraries and organized entertainment and educational and |
|
recreational programs for military personnel throughout the world, |
|
contributing greatly to the comfort and well-being of the troops; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
80th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the hundreds of |
|
thousands of women who served in the military during World War II |
|
and to the millions who served on the home front and express |
|
heartfelt appreciation for their courageous contributions to |
|
the war effort; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to |
|
commemorate their service to our nation. |
