SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 966
       WHEREAS, The people of the Lone Star State have lost
one of their most public-spirited citizens with the passing 
of Jim S. Sale on February 2, 2007; and
       WHEREAS, Born on September 28, 1932, during the Great 
Depression, Mr. Sale was resourceful even as a child, delivering
the Dallas Morning News and fishing in Turtle Creek in order to
help his family; and
       WHEREAS, Jim Sale was still a student at North Dallas High
School when he joined the Air National Guard; after serving in
Japan and Korea during the Korean War, he used the GI Bill to
attend Southern Methodist University and earned a bachelor's
degree in 1956; while in college, he joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon
fraternity and became its president in his senior year; and
       WHEREAS, Mr. Sale was engaged in the insurance industry
until the 1960s, when he began a long and accomplished career
as a stockbroker; he spent nearly two decades with Weber,
Hall, Sale and Associates, where he held the office of executive
vice president, and then, in the late 1980s, went to work for
Alex. Brown & Sons, now Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown, becoming
director of its Dallas office shortly after joining the team;
and
       WHEREAS, It was important to Jim Sale that he be remembered
as a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 20 years; during
that time he helped hundreds of alcoholics in their own battles
against that terrible addiction; he was also a lifelong Methodist,
attending Oak Lawn Methodist Church as a child and becoming a
member of Highland Park United Methodist Church as an adult; and
       WHEREAS, Mr. Sale was an active participant in community
affairs; his work with the Small Business Administration during
the 1980s was a special source of personal pride, as was his
involvement with the Democratic Party; he served as chair of the
Small Business Council of the Democratic National Committee and
as director of the Democratic Finance Council, in addition to
raising funds for various political candidates; and
       WHEREAS, The dynamic leadership of this esteemed Texan was
also put to excellent use by such agencies as the Veterans' Land
Board of Texas and the Texas Industrial Commission, as well as
the Texas Criminal Justice Board, the board of the National Space
Institute, and the board of the Texas A&M University College of
Science; and
       WHEREAS, Traveling, hunting, playing gin rummy, feeding
ducks with his grandchildren, boating at Lake Texoma, and cheering
for the Dallas Cowboys were some of the pastimes that brought
Mr. Sale great joy; an ardent golfer and gregarious gentleman,
he belonged to a number of organizations, including the Terps
Club, Calyx, and the Brook Hollow Golf Club, where his good nature
earned him numerous friends; and
       WHEREAS, Possessed of a great heart, Jim Sale brightened
immeasurably the world around him and endeavored always to
improve the lot of those who were less fortunate than he was;
he paved his own way in life and is greatly admired by all who
had the opportunity to know him; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Jim S. Sale
and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: 
his children, James Swift Sale, Jeffrey Leonard Sale,
Leslie Allison Sale, John Smith Sale, and Jess Garrison Sale;
his stepdaughters, Marjorie Querbes Briley, Elizabeth Querbes,
and Mary Elizabeth Bond; his grandchildren, Emily Catherine Sale,
James Drew Holderman, Matthew John Holderman,
David Jeffrey Holderman, and Mary Elizabeth Sale;
and his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
this day, it do so in memory of Jim S. Sale.
