SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 969
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the citizens of Walden on Lake Conroe for developing an
emergency preparedness team to respond to natural disasters; and
       WHEREAS, Walden is located on a peninsula in Lake Conroe;
on three occasions in its recent past, the community was isolated
due to natural disasters; and
       WHEREAS, The Walden Emergency Management Action Team was
formed in 2003, and a program was developed to respond to the needs
of residents following an emergency, such as a tornado, hurricane,
or other natural disaster, when regular Montgomery County emergency
providers are not available; and
       WHEREAS, In January of 2004, Montgomery County received a
$25,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security for the Walden
Emergency Management Action Team (WEMAT) and the organization was
merged with the Homeland Security Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT) and became known as WEMAT/CERT; and
       WHEREAS, The team has grown and now has 175 volunteer members
who serve a community of 6,500 residents; eight members have become
certified as trainers, and 31 members have completed the team's
100-hour training course; and
       WHEREAS, Being prepared for emergencies is important in
ensuring the safety and well-being of each citizen in the community;
undoubtedly, all of the citizens of Walden will benefit from the
efforts of the volunteers who have taken the initiative to join
an emergency team in order to help their community in the event of
a disaster; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Walden
Emergency Management Action Team-Community Emergency Response
Team for their volunteer work and training on behalf of their
community; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as
an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
