SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 976
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas on the
auspicious occasion of its 70th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas was
born out of the struggles of pecan shellers in San Antonio in the
1930s; under the leadership of a young Latina, Emma Tenayuca,
this largely immigrant community sought justice as they saw
their wages fall to below subsistence levels; and
WHEREAS, In response to the strike provoked by these
injustices, national labor leaders came to San Antonio and
developed the movement into an event of national importance;
in response to these events Mayor Maury Maverick of San Antonio
and other activists founded the Texas Civil Liberties Union in
1938; and
WHEREAS, In the intervening years, the American Civil
Liberties Union of Texas has fought tirelessly to maintain
people's constitutional rights, and the organization deserves
recognition for its hard work and many achievements; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend the American Civil Liberties
Union of Texas for its enduring work defending the Bill of Rights
and the Constitution of the United States and extend to its members
and leadership best wishes for a memorable 70th anniversary
celebration; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
this exceptional organization as an expression of high regard
from the Texas Senate.
