SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1000
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association, |
|
|
International Association of Fire Fighters Local 341 for its many |
|
|
years of outstanding service to the firefighters of Houston; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Professional firefighters in Houston first |
|
|
organized in 1902 as part of the American Federation of Labor; |
|
|
these early union members were successful in establishing |
|
|
changes to the city's charter that improved the pensions of |
|
|
firefighters and police officers and authorized the construction |
|
|
and maintenance of municipal hospitals and orphanages; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Houston Professional Fire Fighters |
|
|
Association became the International Association of Fire |
|
|
Fighters Local 341 on November 25, 1932, with 25 members; today, |
|
|
with more than 3,800 courageous men and women, the Houston Fire |
|
|
Department is the third-largest fire department in the nation, |
|
|
and Local 341 is the third-largest firefighters' union in the |
|
|
country; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The leadership and members of the Houston |
|
|
Professional Fire Fighters Association have worked to ensure |
|
|
appropriate wages for a skilled and dangerous profession, a |
|
|
pension that recognizes the limited number of working years, and |
|
|
modern protective clothing and equipment for firefighters; |
|
|
through its committed work with elected officials, the union has |
|
|
helped establish such safeguards as the Meet and Confer bill and |
|
|
the right to collectively bargain; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Houston Professional Fire Fighters |
|
|
Association, International Association of Fire Fighters Local |
|
|
341 has served its members and the Houston firefighters for 75 |
|
|
years and is truly deserving of recognition for its exceptional |
|
|
service and many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
|
80th Legislature, hereby commend the Houston Professional Fire |
|
|
Fighters Association, International Association of Fire Fighters |
|
|
Local 341 for 75 years of exemplary service to the Houston |
|
|
firefighters and to its union members; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
this organization as an expression of high regard from the |
|
|
Texas Senate. |
