SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1016
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize Zion Lutheran Church and School in Walburg on the grand |
|
|
occasion of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the church |
|
|
and school; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Zion Lutheran Church was established in 1882 as a |
|
|
place of worship for persons of German-Wendish descent, many of |
|
|
whom had immigrated to Texas in the 1850s in the area of present |
|
|
day Lee County; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Some of the pioneers began migrating to the |
|
|
northeastern part of Williamson County in the late 1870s; the |
|
|
settlement became known as Walburg, and the settlers established |
|
|
the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Concordia, a school, and |
|
|
a church cemetery; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The congregation grew through the years despite |
|
|
challenges such as a fierce tornado in June of 1886 that moved |
|
|
the church building off its foundation; members have rebuilt and |
|
|
placed additions on both the school and the church building; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Zion Lutheran Church and School are celebrating |
|
|
their 125th anniversary throughout the year of 2007 with a number |
|
|
of events, including the dedication of an official Texas Historical |
|
|
Marker; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, As they celebrate its 125th anniversary, the |
|
|
members of Zion Lutheran Church can take great pride in the church's |
|
|
rich history and its enduring commitment to its holy mission, |
|
|
and the cross first raised in 1882 on a small tower high on a hill |
|
|
overlooking Williamson County can continue to serve as a symbol |
|
|
of hope and inspiration to all; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
|
80th Legislature, hereby congratulate the members of |
|
|
Zion Lutheran Church on the 125th anniversary of the founding |
|
|
of the church and school and extend best wishes for a joyous |
|
|
celebration; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the church as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
