SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1038
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Fernando D. Villarreal
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas
  joins the citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss
  of Fernando D. "Ferny" Villarreal, who died April 16, 2007,
  at the age of 63; and
         WHEREAS, Fernando Villarreal was born on May 30, 1943,
  and grew up on Garfield Alley in downtown San Antonio; he
  overcame tremendous odds to live a fruitful, productive,
  and rewarding life; he was preceded in death by his wife,
  Gloria Gomez Villarreal; and
         WHEREAS, He was an avid sportsman as a young man and
  a standout baseball player with the San Antonio Red Sox and the
  San Antonio Black Socks; he was one of the few Mexican Americans
  to play in the African American baseball leagues in the early
  1960s, and he was a coach for several Little League teams at
  Prospect Hill; and
         WHEREAS, He was a 23-year employee of the San Antonio
  Independent School District and was passionate about the role
  he played in the education of disadvantaged youths; for a period,
  he also served as a licensed barber and took pride in making
  a warm and hospitable place for his clients; and
         WHEREAS, Ferny Villarreal was a beloved and esteemed member
  of the San Antonio community, and he will be greatly missed;
  he was a devoted father and grandfather, and he leaves behind
  memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many
  friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
  the bereaved family of Fernando D. Villarreal: his sons,
  Fernando Villarreal, Jr., Lorenzo Villarreal, Darrell Villarreal,
  and Adam Villarreal; and his grandchildren, Andrew, Ethan, Aiden,
  and Alyson; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
  day, it do so in memory of Fernando D. Villarreal.
