SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1045
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Leslie Louis Appelt
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of Leslie Louis Appelt, who died
  April 22, 2007, at the age of 88; and
         WHEREAS, Leslie Appelt was born in Hallettsville on
  March 13, 1919; he graduated from Texas A&M University in 1941,
  and he remained a devoted alumnus; the university's rich
  traditions and the camaraderie among students and graduates
  had a profound effect on both his personal and business endeavors
  throughout his life; and
         WHEREAS, After serving his country during World War II,
  he began his distinguished career in commercial real estate; in
  1957, he founded Leslie L. Appelt and Associates, the company
  that became Colliers, Appelt, Womack, Incorporated, and then
  Colliers International-Houston; he was chairman emeritus of the
  board; and
         WHEREAS, He served as a consultant to major corporations
  and foundations that developed such properties as the
  Jacintoport Industrial Park; he held leadership roles in
  national and local commercial real estate industry associations;
  and
         WHEREAS, He was chairman and trustee emeritus of the
  Texas A&M University Foundation and served on the president's
  council and the advisory board of the Texas A&M Institute of
  Biosciences and Technology; he was founder and director of the
  Texas A&M University Center for Education and Research in Free
  Enterprise; he established the Leslie L. Appelt President's
  Endowed Scholarship and the Leslie L. Appelt 12th Man Endowed
  Scholarship; and
         WHEREAS, His love of central Texas prompted his leadership
  in the Limousin cattle industry at Oak Meadows Ranch in La Grange,
  and he designed and developed the highly acclaimed ColoVista
  Country Club along the Colorado River in Bastrop; and
         WHEREAS, His civic and religious activities included
  service with the Houston Chamber of Commerce, Saint Luke's
  United Methodist Church, and the First United Methodist Church
  of Bastrop; he served on the board of directors of several
  organizations involved with clean water standards and the
  environment; and
         WHEREAS, Leslie L. Appelt was a distinguished gentleman
  and a respected and trusted community and business leader; his
  commitment to his profession, loyalty to his alma mater, and
  concern for the environment has had a positive and lasting impact
  on this state, and he enriched the lives of many Texans; and
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted father and grandfather, and he
  leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by his
  family and all those whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
  bereaved family of Leslie Louis Appelt:  his sons and
  daughters-in-law, Daren R. Appelt, Dr. Gary L. Appelt and Sandi,
  and Kenneth L. Appelt and Kathi; his daughter and son-in-law,
  Rebecca A. Conkling and Bill; his seven grandchildren and seven
  great-grandchildren; his stepsons, Brandon, Kevin, and Scott Coleman;
  and his stepdaughters, Vanessa Landram, Kimberly Wise, and
  Myra Skinner; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
  day, it do so in memory of Leslie Louis Appelt.
