Thomas Cullin DeChant |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Thomas Cullin DeChant of San Antonio, |
|
who died on June 12, 2006, at the age of 78; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Thomas DeChant was born on July 13, 1927, in |
|
Cleveland, Ohio; after serving for a time as a Cleveland police |
|
officer, he joined the United States Postal Service in 1943 and |
|
began a successful career that would span nearly five decades; |
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A highly respected leader in the San Antonio |
|
community, Mr. DeChant was actively involved in numerous |
|
organizations, including the Bexar County Metropolitan Planning |
|
Organization, the Air Quality Control Commission, the |
|
San Antonio Crime Commission, and the Traditional Crime |
|
Prevention Council; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, During his retirement, his efforts in the |
|
community were focused on the welfare of senior citizens and |
|
issues regarding crimes against the elderly; he was active in the |
|
Comprehensive Nutrition Project of Senior Citizens, the District |
|
10 Senior Citizens Commission, and the Joint City-County |
|
Commission on Elderly Affairs; moreover, he was instrumental in |
|
the passage of a law that made preying on the elderly a felony; |
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In addition to his community-wide projects, |
|
Mr. DeChant served his fellow residents by cofounding the Alamo |
|
Area Brown Backers and the Oak Grove Neighborhood Association; |
|
for his exceptional contributions to the City of San Antonio, he |
|
was honored by San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman of courage, compassion, |
|
unwavering integrity, and boundless energy, Tom DeChant had a |
|
profound desire to make a positive difference in the lives of |
|
others, and although this dedicated Texan is greatly missed by |
|
those who knew him, he will long be remembered with affection and |
|
appreciation by all who were privileged to share in his life; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
80th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
|
Thomas Cullin DeChant and extend sincere condolences to the |
|
members of his family: his daughters and sons-in-law, |
|
Denise Ann Murray and Michael Murray, Diane DeChant, |
|
Debra Marie Harbison and the Reverend W. Scott Harbison, and |
|
Dorrine Harriette DeChant; his son, Thomas J. DeChant; his |
|
granddaughter, Cassandra DeChant Harbison; his brother, |
|
Gerald DeChant; his sister, Patricia Telepak; and his other |
|
relatives; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy |
|
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this |
|
day, it do so in memory of Thomas Cullin DeChant. |
