SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1079
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Monsignor Balthasar Joseph Janacek
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Monsignor
  Balthasar Joseph "Balty" Janacek, who died April 30, 2007,
  at the age of 80; and
 
         WHEREAS, Monsignor Janacek was a beloved spiritual leader
  who was well known in the San Antonio area for his efforts to
  preserve four 18th-century missions and for negotiating a
  landmark agreement between the Archdiocese of San Antonio
  and the National Park Service; and
 
         WHEREAS, He had been the director of the Old Spanish
  Missions for the Archdiocese since 1967; he served as an ex
  officio member of the friends of the park group, Los Compadres,
  and he recently established a nonprofit organization to raise
  funds for the mission churches; and
 
         WHEREAS, Balthasar Joseph Janacek was born in Deweesville
  on November 8, 1926; he attended Saint John's High School
  Seminary and Saint John's Major Seminary in San Antonio; he was
  ordained a priest in 1950 and first served as assistant pastor at
  Saint Rose Parish in Schulenberg and then at Saint Agnes in the
  Rio Grande Valley; and
 
         WHEREAS, He returned to San Antonio in 1962 as pastor of
  Saint Cecilia's Church and served at other parishes, including
  Saint Lawrence Catholic Church, Christ the King Church,
  San Fernando Cathedral, and San Francesco di Paola Catholic
  Church; he was named a monsignor in 1968; and
 
         WHEREAS, Father Balty was the spiritual director for
  the Cursillo Movement; he was president of the Texas Old Forts
  and Missions Restoration Association and a member of the
  Archdiocesan Commission for Mexican American Affairs; and
 
         WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Monsignor Janacek was
  dedicated to each parish he served; he has had a profound impact
  on the lives of many people, and he will be greatly missed; now,
  therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
  bereaved family of Monsignor Balthasar Joseph Janacek: his
  sister, Josephine Severa; and his sisters-in-law, Olga Janacek,
  Marcie Janacek, and Mary Jane Janacek; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
  for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
  it do so in memory of Monsignor Balthasar Janacek.
