SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1095
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Jose Luis Flores
 
         WHEREAS, It was with great sadness and a profound sense of
  loss that the members of the Texas Senate and the citizens of our
  state learned of the death of Jose Luis Flores, Sr.; and
 
         WHEREAS, The City of San Antonio lost a native son with the
  passing of Joe Flores on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at the age of
  84; born in San Antonio on August 8, 1922, Joe Flores was a
  distinguished citizen of our state and an exemplary gentleman who
  was dedicated to his wife, family, church, and community; and
 
         WHEREAS, He was a devout Christian and served as an active
  parishioner of Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church for 47
  years; he also worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others
  and their communities by serving in the Civilian Conservation
  Corps; and
 
         WHEREAS, He proudly served his country in the United States
  Navy on board the USS Shangri-La during World War II; he was
  wounded in battle and received a Purple Heart; and
 
         WHEREAS, Following his service in the navy, he returned to
  San Antonio, where he resumed his work at Kelly Air Force Base and
  served the United States government with distinction as a federal
  police officer for 35 years; he also established an importing
  business and imported the first jalapeño peppers from Mexico; and
 
         WHEREAS, He was given the privilege of guarding his
  Holiness Pope John Paul II on the occasion of his visit to
  San Antonio and received a Papal blessing upon the Pope's
  departure from Kelly Air Force Base; and
 
         WHEREAS, He believed strongly in the importance of
  citizenship and a strong work ethic, and he will long be
  remembered with affection and appreciation by all who were
  privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby honor the life of Jose Luis Flores, Sr.,
  and extend profound condolences to the members of his family:  
  his wife of 54 years, Zayra Medrano de Flores; his children,
  Theresa Dougherty, Joe L. Flores, Jr., and his wife, Rose,
  Gerald M. Flores and his wife, Judge Karen Crouch, Zayra M. Flores,
  Kathy Guerra and her husband, Ivan, Javier Flores and his wife,
  Esther; his grandchildren, David Dougherty and his wife, Sylvia,
  Alexander and Amanda Mena, Gerald, Nicholas, Lillianna Flores,
  Giovanni Guerra, Angelica and Javier Flores; and his great
  grandchildren, Peyton and Ethan Dougherty; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
  day, it do so in the memory of Jose Luis Flores, Sr.
