SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1122
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
recognize Dr. John Pickelman, who is retiring from his position |
|
as Chancellor of the North Harris Montgomery Community College |
|
District after 16 years of dedicated service; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, With five comprehensive colleges, North Harris |
|
Montgomery Community College District is a public community |
|
college district that serves a population of more than one |
|
million residents; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, During his tenure as the chief executive officer |
|
for the fourth largest community college district in the state, |
|
Dr. Pickelman created an educational environment that encouraged |
|
creative innovation in the classroom and responsiveness to the |
|
academic needs of the community; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He has made significant contributions to higher |
|
education and to the Houston community through his leadership in |
|
many professional associations and community service |
|
organizations, including the Greater Houston Partnership, the |
|
Houston 2012 Olympic Committee, and The Woodlands Society for the |
|
Performing Arts; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Before being named Chancellor of the North Harris |
|
Montgomery Community College District in 1991, Dr. Pickelman |
|
served eight years as the president of Galveston College and held |
|
administrative positions previously with the Dallas County |
|
Community College District, Brookhaven College, Texas Lutheran |
|
College, and William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He earned a bachelor's degree in English from Albion |
|
College in Michigan, a master's degree in education from the |
|
University of Missouri at Kansas City, and a doctorate in |
|
educational administration from The University of Texas at Austin; |
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He is president-elect of the executive committee |
|
of the Texas Association of Community Colleges and serves on the |
|
board of trustees for the Southern Association of Colleges and |
|
Schools and on the Commission on Leadership for the American |
|
Council on Education; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Pickelman has been an exceptional leader in |
|
higher education in Texas and a tremendous asset to the Houston |
|
community; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
80th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. John Pickelman for his |
|
commitment to the North Harris Montgomery Community College |
|
District and his many contributions to the community college |
|
system of this state and extend to him best wishes for the future; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
