SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1132
         WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to honor the First State
  Bank of New Braunfels for over 100 years of outstanding service
  to the people of Central Texas; and
 
         WHEREAS, The bank's predecessor, the Bank of Smithville,
  was founded by local merchants John C. Yerger, his son-in-law
  John W. Hill, and his grandson Yerger Hill and was established as
  a privately owned institution 114 years ago in the front of the
  family's hardware store; and
 
         WHEREAS, Under the wise leadership of its founders, the
  bank flourished and prospered and in 1902 entered into a
  partnership, inviting other business leaders in the community to
  become investors; and
 
         WHEREAS, Throughout its ensuing history, the First State
  Bank has demonstrated a lasting commitment to the prosperity and
  civic health of the communities it serves; and
 
         WHEREAS, During the Great Depression in the 1930s, the bank
  assumed the deposits of the failed First National Bank of Smithville,
  paying off depositors who otherwise would have been subject to
  loss; and
 
         WHEREAS, In addition, when a school finance bill was not
  enacted by the legislature in time to pay local teachers' 
  salaries, the bank generously provided funds until state funding
  was approved; and
 
         WHEREAS, Over its proud and successful lifetime, the
  First State Bank has proven itself a strong and stable financial
  institution, and today it has more than 75 shareholders and
  assets of more than $215 million; and
 
         WHEREAS, With 80 staff members and a board of directors
  including Yerger Hill III, Barry Williams, Doug Miller,
  John Harrell, Earl Steinbach, Carroll Rable, and Ken Blaschke,
  the bank is an integral part of Smithville, Bastrop, New Braunfels,
  and Canyon Lake; and
 
         WHEREAS, For 114 years the First State Bank has maintained
  a vital role in Central Texas and has actively worked to improve
  the quality of life for the citizens of this state; now,
  therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby commend the First State Bank of
  New Braunfels for the important contributions it has made to
  the community for over a century; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  each of the members of the board as an expression of high regard
  from the Texas Senate.
