SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1168
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize the West Texas Food Bank for its outstanding success |
|
|
in providing food assistance to needy citizens and to join |
|
|
El Pasoans in observing the month of June as El Paso's Hunger |
|
|
Awareness Month; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1985 by a small group of concerned |
|
|
citizens to address the critical issue of hunger in West Texas, |
|
|
the West Texas Food Bank annually distributes more than 5 million |
|
|
pounds of food to nonprofit partner food agencies; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The West Texas Food Bank has many programs in |
|
|
place to achieve its objectives, including Kids Cafe, one of the |
|
|
nation's largest charitable meal service programs, BackPacks for |
|
|
Kids, and Hunters for the Hungry; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, To help promote Hunger Awareness Month, the |
|
|
West Texas Food Bank has called upon all elected El Paso officials |
|
|
to join them in the "Food Stamp Challenge," which means living |
|
|
off the food that an average food stamp recipient is allocated |
|
|
from May 29 to June 5; the average El Paso County food stamp |
|
|
recipient receives $22.45 per week, or $1.06 per meal; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, For more than 20 years, the West Texas |
|
|
Food Bank has played a vital role in meeting the needs of the |
|
|
underprivileged by distributing food through a network of |
|
|
agencies and by heightening public awareness of the issues of |
|
|
hunger; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
|
80th Legislature, hereby commend the West Texas Food Bank for |
|
|
its exceptional accomplishments in combating hunger and join |
|
|
citizens across the state in honoring June as El Paso Hunger |
|
|
Awareness Month; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the West Texas Food Bank as an expression of high regard from the |
|
|
Texas Senate. |
