SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1169
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the citizens of El Paso and West Texas in celebrating the
  sesquicentennial of El Paso and Southwestern Locomotive No. 1;
  and
         WHEREAS, El Paso and Southwestern Locomotive No. 1 was
  built in 1857; it was named Spring Green when it first came to the
  Southwest in 1889; it was designated No. 1 by the El Paso and
  Southwestern Railroad that served the Gadsden Purchase area of
  the New Mexico Territory; by 1902, it was used to connect
  southern Arizona Territory through El Paso to northeastern
  New Mexico Territory; and
         WHEREAS, El Paso and Southwestern Locomotive No. 1
  is a classic standard American steam locomotive built by
  Breese Kneeland and Company at the New York Locomotive Works of
  Jersey City, New Jersey; it is the oldest classic American steam
  engine west of the Mississippi River and the only Breese Kneeland
  locomotive still in existence; and
         WHEREAS, Classic American locomotives pulled the
  trains that opened Texas and the West to transcontinental
  traffic and trade; the locomotives were used to connect the
  Central Pacific Railroad to the Union Pacific Railroad on the
  first transcontinental rail line in 1869 and again when the
  second transcontinental railroad connected Texas to California,
  the Midwest, and New Orleans; and
         WHEREAS, El Paso and Southwestern Locomotive No. 1 was
  retired in 1909 and placed on display in El Paso; it was moved to
  Texas Western College in 1960; it is listed on Save America's
  Treasures; while at The University of Texas at El Paso, it was
  restored and is now on display in the Railroad and Transportation
  Museum of El Paso; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to El Paso and
  Southwestern Locomotive No. 1 on its 150th anniversary and
  extend best wishes to the citizens of El Paso and to the members
  of the El Paso County Historical Commission and the Southwest
  Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society
  for a rewarding sesquicentennial celebration for El Paso and
  Southwestern Locomotive No. 1; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
  memento of the special occasion.
