Lee Hage Jamail |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Lee Hage Jamail, who died January 15, 2007, |
|
at the age of 76; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Lee Jamail was born November 28, 1930, in Austin |
|
to Mitry Kalil and Lily Hage; a strong supporter of education, |
|
health care, and the arts in Texas, she will be remembered for her |
|
grace, her dignity, and her compassion for others, exemplified by |
|
her generosity and philanthropy; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She earned a bachelor's degree from Incarnate Word |
|
College, and she completed graduate work in speech pathology at |
|
The University of Texas at Austin; she taught in schools in Austin |
|
and Sugar Land until her third son was born; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Lee Jamail established the Jessie H. Villarreal |
|
Professorship in Speech Pathology at The University of Texas at |
|
Austin and helped create the first volunteer program at the |
|
Houston Speech and Hearing Center; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Some of the beneficiaries of her generosity were |
|
Rice University, The University of Texas Medical Branch at |
|
Galveston, Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas |
|
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the Museum of Fine Arts in |
|
Houston; she was instrumental in the restoration and renovation |
|
of the historic Bayou Bend collection; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Jamail and her husband were responsible for |
|
the creation and funding of many scholarships for deserving |
|
students at many colleges and universities; they established |
|
more than 2,000 scholarships at The University of Texas at Austin, |
|
where the swimming center is named in Lee Jamail's honor; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Jamail served on the Board of Governors of |
|
Rice University, the Board of Trustees of the Kinkaid School, |
|
and the Development Board of Saint Martin's Episcopal Church in |
|
Houston; she and her husband were named Distinguished Alumni |
|
of the Houston Ex-Students Association and they received the |
|
Distinguished Alumnus Award from The University of Texas at |
|
Austin; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A woman with a dauntless spirit, she gave |
|
generously to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued |
|
counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and |
|
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, |
|
and she will long be remembered for her selfless generosity and |
|
her many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the |
|
bereaved family of Lee Hage Jamail: her husband of 57 years, |
|
Joseph D. Jamail; her sons, Dahr Jamail, Randall Jamail, and |
|
Robert Jamail; her grandchildren, Vanessa, Justice, Blanche, |
|
Lili Marie, Dylan, Joe, Robert, Noah, and Martha; her brother, |
|
M.K. Hage; and her sister, Christine Fidel; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy |
|
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this |
|
day, it do so in memory of Lee Hage Jamail. |
