March 5, 2007

TO:
Honorable Jerry Madden, Chair, House Committee on Corrections

IN RE:
HB168 by Raymond (Relating to the efficient use by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice of county jail beds provided by contract between the department and counties.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Government Code by requiring the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to develop a method for projecting the number of county jail beds that are available to TDCJ for the confinement of inmates.  The bill would also require TDCJ to determine which inmates would be the best candidates for confinement in county jail beds.  The Commission on Jail Standards would be required to assist TDCJ in fulfilling the requirements of the bill.

Both the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Commission on Jail Standards anticipate no significant fiscal implications due to the implementation of the bill.

Local Government Impact

No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
