LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 80TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

February 23, 2007

TO:
Honorable Rob Eissler, Chair, House Committee on Public Education

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB179 by Bailey (Relating to the authority of the boards of trustees of certain school districts to close low-performing high school campuses.), As Introduced

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Local Government Impact

No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.

In school districts with enrollment of at least 200,000 students, the bill would require a local board of trustees to obtain approval from the Texas Education Agency before ordering the closure of a high school campus that has been rated academically unacceptable under the state's accountability system.  Currently, Houston Independent School District is the only school district with enrollment exceeding 200,000 students.
