LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 80TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

March 19, 2007

TO:
Honorable Rob Eissler, Chair, House Committee on Public Education

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB1270 by Eissler (Relating to an intensive reading and language intervention pilot program at certain public school campuses.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill requires the commissioner of education to establish by rule an intensive reading and language intervention pilot program. The bill requires the Commissioner to allocate up to $6 million for the pilot from funds appropriated for accelerated instruction under Chapter 28.0211, Education Code.  The pilot program is consistent with the purposes outlined in that chapter.

Local Government Impact

To the extent that the provisions of the bill would redirect funding that would otherwise be granted to a broad range of school districts, there could be loss of funding in some districts with gains among districts participating in the intensive instruction pilot program established by the bill.
