LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 80TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

March 4, 2007

TO:
Honorable Jerry Madden, Chair, House Committee on Corrections

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB1354 by Madden (Relating to housing conditions for inmates confined in a facility operated by or under contract with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Government Code by establishing a space standard for square footage per inmate in privately operated facilities and repeal the statutory prohibition on housing offenders in areas not built for offender housing.  The Texas Department of Criminal Justice states that the exact fiscal impact of the bill cannot be determined; however, it is assumed that the bill would not significantly affect the operations of state or local government.

Local Government Impact

No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
