No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Transportation Code relating to the identification information required of applicants for a driver's license or for certain public benefits, public services, or governmental employment. The bill would prohibit the Department of Public Safety and state agencies or political subdivisions of the state from accepting an identity document issued by a consular office or consular official of another country as a primary, secondary or supporting proof of an applicant’s identity or to receive a public benefit or service.

The bill would take effect immediately if two-thirds of the House of Representatives and Senate members vote to enact the legislation.  If it does not receive the vote necessary for immediate impact, the bill would take effect on September 1, 2007.

The Department of Public Safety anticipates no significant fiscal impact to the agency.


Local Government Impact

No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
