LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 80TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 2, 2007

TO:
Honorable Rob Eissler, Chair, House Committee on Public Education

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB1616 by Dutton (Relating to the dates for which public school student enrollment information must be submitted under the Public Education Information Management System.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

This bill would require school districts and open-enrollment charter school to submit enrollment data through the Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS) twice a year:  the last Friday of October and the last Friday of March.

The cost to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to add a new PEIMS data collection after March is not expected to be significant.

Local Government Impact

TEA estimates that school districts would be required to update either locally developed Student Information Software (SIS) or vendor software.  The agency estimates the cost per district to update SIS software applications would be approximately $10,000 per district for a cost of $12 million statewide.
