LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 80TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 3, 2007

TO:
Honorable Dianne White Delisi, Chair, House Committee on Public Health

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB33 by Nelson (Relating to hepatitis B vaccination for students enrolled in certain health-related courses of study in an institution of higher education.), As Engrossed

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill requires hepatitis B vaccines for students enrolled in courses that involve potential exposure to human or animal blood or bodily fluids. Most institutions at the University of Texas System either currently require the hepatitis B vaccination or make it available to students in situations covered by the bill. The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center currently requires students to be immunized against hepatitis B prior to enrollment in a course of study that involves potential exposure to human or animal blood or bodily fluids. Texas A&M System Health Science Center indicates that any cost associated with the implementation of the bill can be accomplished utilizing existing resources. Students would be responsible for the cost of the immunizations.

Local Government Impact

No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
