April 23, 2007

TO:
Honorable John Whitmire, Chair, Senate Committee on Criminal Justice

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB503 by Hegar (Relating to funding for the continuing education of certain peace officers.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Government Code and revise reporting requirements associated with receiving funds for continuing education for law enforcement agencies. Additionally, the Governor's Office shall administer a continuing education grant program for law enforcement agencies. It is assumed that any additional duties and responsibilities associated with implementing the provisions of the bill could be absorbed within existing state resources.

Local Government Impact

The provisions of Section 1 of the bill would result in a positive fiscal impact to those local law enforcement agencies that apply for, are awarded, and accept a grant from the criminal justice division for continuing education of eligible employees.

No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated to implement the provisions of Section 2 of the bill.
