LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 80TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 17, 2007

TO:
Honorable Dianne White Delisi, Chair, House Committee on Public Health

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB983 by West, Royce (Relating to the screening of newborns for sickle cell trait by the Department of State Health Services.), As Engrossed

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill requires screening for sickle cell trait to be added to the newborn screening program at the Department of State Health Services (DSHS). DSHS indicates that screening for sickle cell trait is a byproduct of tests already conducted so there would be no additional cost for testing. It is assumed that any additional costs to provide notification of positive results could be absorbed within available resources.

Local Government Impact

No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
