LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 80TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

May 15, 2007

TO:
Honorable Royce West, Chair, Senate Committee on Intergovernmental Relations

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB1948 by Ellis (Relating to the maximum annual compensation of certain auxiliary fire fighters.), Committee Report 1st House, Substituted

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Government Code to authorize a fire department located in a municipality with a population of less than 30,000 that has not adopted Chapter 143 or 174, Local Government Code; that is not covered by Chapter 142, Local Government Code; and that does not impose an ad valorem tax on property in the municipality to compensate, reimburse, or provide benefits in a calendar year to a person designated as an auxiliary fire fighter. The bill stipulates how the amount of compensation would be determined.

The bill would take effect September 1, 2007.

Local Government Impact

The fiscal impact would depend on the number of persons to whom compensation would be paid and at what amount the compensation would be within the parameters of the bill. It is assumed that a fire department would establish compensation at a level that could be absorbed within the department's budget; therefore, no significant fiscal impact to units of local government is anticipated.
