Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Education was held on Monday, June 23, 2008, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.028, at Austin, Texas.

The chair called the meeting to order at 9:03 a.m. The following business was transacted:
Senator Shapiro made opening remarks to the Committee.
Senator Zaffirini moved adoption of the minutes from the previous hearings held on February 27, 2008, and May 19, 2008; without objection, it was so ordered.
The chair called the following invited witnesses to provide testimony on the following charge: Study the effectiveness of public school programs serving special education students, including autistic students. Specifically, consider whether special education services are adequately preparing students for post-secondary opportunities. The review should also include the availability and quality of the supports and services provided by adult services agencies for individuals with disabilities. Make recommendations for improving public school special education programs and the coordination of adult education services among state agencies. See attached list.
At 10:35 a.m. Senator Zaffirini assumed the chair.
At 10:36 a.m. Senator Shapiro
resumed the chair.
At 1:00 p.m. Senator Van de Putte assumed the chair.
At 1:20 p.m. Senator Shapiro resumed the chair.
The chair called persons who registered as public witnesses to provide testimony on the interim committee charge. See attached list.
The chair called the following invited witnesses to provide testimony on the following charge: Review and make recommendations regarding best practices for programs targeted to improve the academic success of limited English-proficient students. See attached list.
At 3:15 p.m. Senator Van de Putte assumed the chair.
At 4:03 p.m. Senator Shapiro resumed the chair.
The chair called persons who registered as public witnesses to provide testimony on the interim committee charge. See attached list.
There being no further business, at 5:25 p.m. Senator Shapiro moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the chair. Without objection, it was so ordered.
