Pursuant to suspension of Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Standing Senate Subcommittee on Higher Education was held on Thursday, May 17, 2007, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.028, at Austin, Texas.

The chair called the meeting to order at 7:00 a.m.  The following business was transacted: 

 

The chair laid out HB 544 by Representative Strama and recognized the Senate sponsor,   Senator Watson, to explain the bill. Senator Averitt sent up a committee substitute for HB 544, and the chair recognized Senator Watson to explain the difference between the committee substitute and the House bill as filed. The proposed committee substitute was withdrawn.

 

Names of witnesses who testified and registered for, against, or on the bill are on the attached list. The chair closed public testimony.

 

HB 544 was left pending to await a quorum.

 

The chair laid out HB 3382 by Representative Naishtat and recognized Senator Watson to explain the bill sponsored by Senator Uresti. Senator Averitt sent up a committee substitute for HB 3382, and the chair recognized Senator Watson to explain the difference between the committee substitute and the House bill as filed. The proposed committee substitute was withdrawn.

Upon arrival of a quorum, Senator Averitt moved that HB 3382 be reported favorably to the full committee for its recommendation to the Senate that it do pass and be printed. There being         4 ayes and 0 nays, HB 3382 was reported favorably. 

 

Senator Averitt moved that HB 544 be reported favorably to the full committee for its recommendation to the Senate that it do pass and be printed. There being 4 ayes and 0 nays,     HB 544 was reported favorably. 

 

Senator Patrick moved that the minutes of the May 14, 2007, hearing be approved. The motion was adopted by unanimous consent.
