R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Samuel Dowlen of Midland achieved an exciting goal |
|
|
in May 2009 with his participation in the Scripps National Spelling |
|
|
Bee; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A homeschooled seventh-grader, Mr. Dowlen has |
|
|
developed outstanding proficiency in spelling, and he previously |
|
|
competed in the prestigious national competition in 2008; at this |
|
|
year's event in Washington, D.C., he was sponsored by the Midland |
|
|
Reporter-Telegram, and he competed against 292 participants from |
|
|
across the United States, as well as students from China, South |
|
|
Korea, Canada, and other countries; with the support of his parents |
|
|
and grandparents, this talented 13-year-old skillfully represented |
|
|
the city of Midland, spelling such words as "prolific" and |
|
|
"ptomaine"; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Active in various extracurricular activities, |
|
|
Samuel enjoys basketball and track, and he performed a leading role |
|
|
in the musical "The Christmas County Spelling Bee"; he is |
|
|
interested in cars, electronics, and science, and he plans to |
|
|
pursue a career in automotive engineering; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Samuel Dowlen has proven himself to be a young man of |
|
|
ability, determination, and poise under pressure, and he may indeed |
|
|
look forward to a future that is bright with promise; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Samuel Dowlen |
|
|
on his participation in the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee and |
|
|
extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and |
|
|
happiness; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Mr. Dowlen as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
