R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Samuel Dowlen of Midland achieved an exciting goal
  in May 2009 with his participation in the Scripps National Spelling
  Bee; and
         WHEREAS, A homeschooled seventh-grader, Mr. Dowlen has
  developed outstanding proficiency in spelling, and he previously
  competed in the prestigious national competition in 2008; at this
  year's event in Washington, D.C., he was sponsored by the Midland
  Reporter-Telegram, and he competed against 292 participants from
  across the United States, as well as students from China, South
  Korea, Canada, and other countries; with the support of his parents
  and grandparents, this talented 13-year-old skillfully represented
  the city of Midland, spelling such words as "prolific" and
  "ptomaine"; and
         WHEREAS, Active in various extracurricular activities,
  Samuel enjoys basketball and track, and he performed a leading role
  in the musical "The Christmas County Spelling Bee"; he is
  interested in cars, electronics, and science, and he plans to
  pursue a career in automotive engineering; and
         WHEREAS, Samuel Dowlen has proven himself to be a young man of
  ability, determination, and poise under pressure, and he may indeed
  look forward to a future that is bright with promise; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Samuel Dowlen
  on his participation in the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee and
  extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and
  happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Dowlen as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
