R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The baseball team from Socorro High School in El
  Paso reached the pinnacle of success by claiming the 2009
  University Interscholastic League 5A state championship on June 13
  at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock; and
         WHEREAS, After dispatching Austin Westlake High School with
  an 11-3 victory in the semifinals, Socorro squared off with Lufkin
  High School in the title game; overcoming an early 2-0 deficit, the
  Bulldogs knotted the score in the fourth inning with a two-run home
  run from tournament Most Valuable Player Cory Falvey, who added a
  grand slam in the fifth to break the game open; the El Paso team
  eventually built a 12-3 lead and held off a late Lufkin rally to
  capture the first state championship in school history by a final
  score of 12-7; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to Mr. Falvey, the Bulldogs benefited
  from the outstanding support and play of the other members of the
  roster: Aaron Olivas, Tavi Amparan, George Stoltz, Chuy Diaz, Chris
  Guzman, Marcus Molina, Oscar Sandate, Ivan Sigala, Josh Rodriguez,
  Angel Soria, Mando Muniz, Luis Yanez, Eric Herrera, Roger Favela,
  Jessiray Navarrette, Sergio Mendoza, Bobby Mares, and Rene
  Rodriguez; and
         WHEREAS, The Bulldogs finished the season with a notable
  record of 35 wins and just 4 losses; instrumental to the team's
  success was the leadership and guidance of head coach Chris Forbes,
  who completed his 25th year at Socorro in 2009; in addition, the
  players profited from the expertise of assistant coaches Joe
  Alvarez, Adrian Garcia, Federico Contreras, and Herbert Reyes as
  well as the encouragement of principal Miguel Serrano; and
         WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents countless
  hours of hard work and an enduring commitment to excellence, and the
  dedicated student-athletes of the Socorro High School baseball team
  will forever treasure their memories of this remarkable season;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate the Socorro
  High School baseball team on winning the UIL 5A state championship
  and extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes
  for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
