R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Gloria Hicks, a tireless supporter of students in
  the Corpus Christi Independent School District, received
  well-deserved recognition when the district's board of trustees
  voted on June 8, 2009, to name a new campus in her honor; and
         WHEREAS, Once construction is completed, Gloria Hicks
  Elementary School is scheduled to open for the 2010-2011 academic
  year, and this new place of learning will be an enduring tribute to
  the admirable work carried out by Mrs. Hicks; and
         WHEREAS, A longtime Corpus Christi resident, the former
  Gloria Rawlings graduated from W. B. Ray High School and earned a
  degree in accounting through her studies at Del Mar College and
  Texas A&I University; she and her husband, Ed Hicks, built a
  successful car dealership business while also raising a family, but
  through the decades, Mrs. Hicks has also found the time and means to
  give back to her community in many ways; and
         WHEREAS, The assistance that this generous individual has
  provided to area schools has taken many forms; she is perhaps best
  known for her efforts to benefit Miller High School, raising more
  than $60,000 to improve its facilities and educational materials,
  and that project was just one example of how she uses her
  organizational abilities and her prominence in the community to
  garner support for worthy initiatives; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Hicks has also devoted herself to helping
  students who find themselves in difficult circumstances, and her
  actions have provided essential resources that allow them to
  continue their studies; moreover, she has sponsored a program in
  which visitors read books at elementary schools, devoting her own
  time to that activity and encouraging others to do likewise; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to those endeavors focused on education,
  Mrs. Hicks takes part in many other philanthropic projects and is an
  active member of the congregation at Yorktown Baptist Church; a
  civic leader renowned for her compassion and her ability to achieve
  positive results, she has dedicated countless hours toward the goal
  of making Corpus Christi an even better place to live, and she is
  indeed a fitting namesake for the district's new elementary school;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to Gloria Hicks
  for her outstanding work in behalf of Corpus Christi students and
  commend the Corpus Christi Independent School District for naming
  Gloria Hicks Elementary School in her honor; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Hicks as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
