R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Dr. Raymond M. Hawkins is retiring as president of
  Lone Star College-Tomball on August 31, 2009, concluding an
  outstanding career in higher education that has spanned more than
  four decades; and
         WHEREAS, This skilled administrator earned a doctorate at The
  University of Texas at Austin in 1972; building on five years of
  teaching experience, he entered the field of administration,
  serving in academic leadership positions for 10 years before
  becoming president of Tyler Junior College in 1981; he completed
  the Community College Leadership Program at UT-Austin in 1988 and
  three years later was appointed president of Lone Star
  College-Tomball; and
         WHEREAS, Deeply committed to higher education, Dr. Hawkins
  has held leadership roles in a number of professional organizations
  through the years; he has served on the Executive Committee of the
  American Association of Community Colleges and on the board of the
  Southern Association of Community, Junior, and Technical Colleges;
  in addition, he was president of the Texas Association of Community
  Colleges and of the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities;
  and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Hawkins has also given generously of his time
  and talents in behalf of the wider community as chair of the United
  Ways of Texas, chair of the Texas Commission for National and
  Community Service, and chair of the East Texas Economic Development
  Commission; moreover, he has held the office of president of the
  Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and of the Texas Foundation for
  Volunteerism and Community Service and served on the board of the
  Community College National Center for Community Engagement; and
         WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Dr. Hawkins enjoys the love
  and support of his wife, Patricia Hawkins, and a beloved family that
  includes five children and six grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, Lone Star College-Tomball has been greatly enriched
  by the dedication and expertise that Dr. Hawkins has brought to the
  office of president, and over the past 40 years, his commitment to
  higher education and to his community has benefited countless
  Texans; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Dr. Raymond
  Hawkins on his retirement as president of Lone Star College-Tomball
  and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Hawkins as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
