SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 26
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Donald Joseph Knapp
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of Donald Joseph Knapp, who died January 5,
  2009, at the age of 79; and
 
         WHEREAS, Donald Joseph Knapp was born on August 7, 1929, in
  Atlanta, Georgia; he earned a civil engineering degree from
  Georgia Institute of Technology and a master's degree in business
  from the University of Southern California; and
 
         WHEREAS, Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander Knapp, retired,
  was a veteran of the Korean War; he served aboard the amphibious
  control ship USS Frybarger and the aircraft carrier USS Coral
  Sea; a loyal patriot, he was a 50-year member of the Sons of the
  American Revolution and a longtime treasurer of the San Antonio
  Alamo Council of the Navy League; for 35 years, he actively
  recruited top students for appointments to the United States
  military academies; and
 
         WHEREAS, An engineering and computer specialist and
  enthusiast, he worked for Hughes Aircraft, UNIVAC, United Press
  International, Crothall Systems, and as a consultant; he was a
  longtime member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
  Engineers; and
 
         WHEREAS, A Georgian by birth, Mr. Knapp embraced being a
  Texan; he moved with his wife to San Antonio some 15 years ago and
  was an active leader in the community; he was a member of Saint
  Matthew's Catholic Church, the Gateway Coin Club, and the San
  Antonio Genealogy and Historical Society; and
 
         WHEREAS, A true Renaissance man, Donald Knapp had an
  endless curiosity and limitless skills; he was exceptionally
  intelligent and had a keen sense of humor that endeared him to his
  family and to all who knew him; an avid proponent for healthy
  living, he encouraged his children to live each day as though
  they had diabetes, a condition with which he lived for 25 years;
  and
 
         WHEREAS, He was married to the late Frances Ann Sheedy
  Knapp for 52 years; a devoted father and grandfather, he followed
  with great interest the deployments of his grandsons to
  Afghanistan, Iraq, and Bahrain; as the members of his family
  continue to mourn his loss, they have many precious memories of
  their beloved "Daddy" that can be treasured forever; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
  condolences to the bereaved family of Donald Joseph Knapp:  his
  daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Fred Minich; his sons and
  daughters-in-law, Robert and Janet Knapp and Bruce and Susan
  Knapp; his brother, William Arnold Knapp, Jr.; his 12
  grandchildren; and his seven great-grandchildren; and, be it
  further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Donald Joseph Knapp.
