A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to tuition exemptions at public institutions of higher |
|
|
education for dependents of certain military personnel deployed in |
|
|
combat zones. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 54.058, Education Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsection (k) to read as follows: |
|
|
(k) An institution of higher education shall exempt from the |
|
|
payment of tuition a dependent child, including a stepchild, of a |
|
|
member of the Armed Forces of the United States for a semester or |
|
|
other academic term during which the member of the armed forces is |
|
|
deployed to combat or a combat support posting in a foreign country. |
|
|
SECTION 2. Section 54.058(k), Education Code, as added by |
|
|
this Act, applies beginning with tuition charged by a public |
|
|
institution of higher education for the 2009-2010 academic year. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
