A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to the issuance of an original or renewal driver's license |
|
to certain persons younger than 18 years of age. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter M, Chapter 521, Transportation Code, |
|
is amended by adding Section 521.2735 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 521.2735. ORIGINAL OR RENEWAL LICENSE ISSUED TO HOLDER |
|
OF PROVISIONAL LICENSE. Notwithstanding Section 521.273, the |
|
department may not issue an original or renewal license to an |
|
applicant who is at least 17 years of age and holds a provisional |
|
license unless the applicant provides evidence satisfactory to the |
|
department that in the 180 days preceding the date of application |
|
the applicant has successfully completed a driver education course |
|
approved by the department, which may be a course approved under |
|
Section 521.205. |
|
SECTION 2. The changes in law made by this Act apply only to |
|
an application for an original or renewal driver's license filed on |
|
or after the effective date of this Act. An application for an |
|
original or renewal driver's license filed before the effective |
|
date of this Act is subject to the law in effect on the date the |
|
application was filed, and the former law is continued in effect for |
|
that purpose. |

SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
