A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to notifying certain entities of the cancellation or
  nonrenewal of a motor vehicle liability insurance policy.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 601.454(a), Transportation Code, is
  amended to read as follows:
         (a)  Each insurance company providing motor vehicle
  liability insurance policies in this state shall:
               (1)  provide necessary information for motor vehicle
  liability insurance [those] policies to allow the agent to carry
  out this subchapter, subject to the agent's contract with the
  implementing agencies and rules adopted under this subchapter; and
               (2)  inform the agent of the policyholder's name if the
  insurance company cancels or does not renew a motor vehicle
  liability insurance policy.
         SECTION 2.  Section 601.454(a), Transportation Code, as
  amended by this Act, applies only to the cancellation or nonrenewal
  of a motor vehicle liability insurance policy on or after the
  effective date of this Act. The cancellation or nonrenewal of a
  motor vehicle liability insurance policy before the effective date
  of this Act is covered by the law in effect on the date the policy is
  canceled or is not renewed, and that former law is continued in
  effect.
         SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
