A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to a study regarding changing the state minimum wage to the |
|
|
living wage. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. (a) In this section, "living wage" means an |
|
|
employee's wage equal to or greater than the per diem wage that |
|
|
would result in annual compensation of at least the federal poverty |
|
|
level for a family of a designated size. |
|
|
(b) The comptroller shall conduct a study on the probable |
|
|
effect on state expenditures for state-provided benefits, |
|
|
including net savings relating to the provision of those benefits, |
|
|
if the state changed the minimum wage to a living wage. |
|
|
(c) Not later than September 1, 2010, the comptroller shall |
|
|
report the results of the study conducted under Subsection (b) of |
|
|
this section to the governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker |
|
|
of the house of representatives, and the standing committee of each |
|
|
house with jurisdiction over the minimum wage. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
