A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to the provision of career and technology education as an
  optional supplement to the general academic program provided by
  public schools.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 28.002(n), Education Code, is amended to
  read as follows:
         (n)  The State Board of Education shall [may] by rule
  develop and implement a plan designed to incorporate foundation
  curriculum requirements into the career and technology education
  curriculum under Subsection (a)(2)(F). In developing and
  implementing the plan, the board shall ensure that the career and
  technology education curriculum is provided as an optional
  supplement for students instead of as a substitute for foundation
  curriculum classes designed to prepare a student for postsecondary
  education.
         SECTION 2.  Section 29.183, Education Code, is amended by
  adding Subsection (d) to read as follows:
         (d)  Career and technology classes may not be offered as a
  substitute for academic classes designed to prepare a student for
  postsecondary education.
         SECTION 3.  This Act applies beginning with the 2010-2011
  school year.
         SECTION 4.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
