A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to assigning mentor teachers to new teachers in certain |
|
subject areas. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Section 21.458, Education Code, is amended by |
|
adding Subsections (a-1) and (e) to read as follows: |
|
(a-1) Notwithstanding Subsection (a), each school district |
|
shall assign a mentor teacher to each classroom teacher who has less |
|
than one year of teaching experience and is teaching a mathematics |
|
or science course at a high school grade level. A teacher assigned |
|
as a mentor under this subsection must: |
|
(1) teach in the same school; |
|
(2) teach the same subject area; and |
|
(3) meet the qualifications prescribed by |
|
commissioner rules adopted under Subsection (b). |
|
(e) Information obtained by a mentor regarding a new teacher |
|
as a result of the mentoring relationship under this section is |
|
confidential, except that the mentor may share the information with |
|
school district personnel as otherwise required by state or federal |
|
law. |

SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2009-2010 |
|
school year. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
