A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to participation by certain educational aides in a school |
|
district's mentoring program. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Section 21.458, Education Code, is amended by |
|
adding Subsection (a-1) and amending Subsection (c) to read as |
|
follows: |
|
(a-1) Each school district may assign a mentor to each |
|
educational aide who has less than one year of classroom |
|
experience. A person assigned as a mentor under this subsection is |
|
not required to be a teacher and is not subject to the requirements |
|
prescribed by Subsections (a) and (b) that apply to a mentor teacher |
|
assigned to mentor a classroom teacher. |
|
(c) From the funds appropriated to the agency for purposes |
|
of this section, the commissioner shall adopt rules and provide |
|
funding to school districts that assign mentors [mentor teachers] |
|
under this section. Funding provided to districts under this |
|
section may be used only for providing: |
|
(1) mentor [teacher] stipends; |
|
(2) scheduled time for mentors [mentor teachers] to |
|
provide mentoring to assigned classroom teachers and educational |
|
aides; and |
|
(3) mentoring support through providers of mentor |
|
training. |
|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2009-2010 |
|
school year. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
