A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to voter registration. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Sections 13.143(a) and (e), Election Code, are |
|
|
amended to read as follows: |
|
|
(a) Except as provided by Subsections (b) and (e), if an |
|
|
applicant's registration application is approved, the registration |
|
|
becomes effective on the 15th [30th] day after the date the |
|
|
application is submitted to the registrar or on the date the |
|
|
applicant becomes 18 years of age, whichever is later. |
|
|
(e) If the 15th [30th] day before the date of an election is |
|
|
a Saturday, Sunday, or legal state or national holiday, an |
|
|
application is considered to be timely if it is submitted to the |
|
|
registrar on or before the next regular business day. |
|
|
SECTION 2. The changes in law made by this Act apply only to |
|
|
a voter registration application submitted on or after the |
|
|
effective date of this Act. The submission of a voter registration |
|
|
application before the effective date of this Act is governed by the |
|
|
law in effect when the application was submitted, and the former law |
|
|
is continued in effect for that purpose. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
