H.C.R. No. 60
 
 
 
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed
  cause for celebration, and Evelyn Ruth Werlein of Houston is
  reaching this important milestone on January 29, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Seattle, Washington, the former Evelyn
  Storey was born on January 29, 1909; her parents were Salvation Army
  officers, and she lived in many cities across the country during her
  youth before finally choosing Houston as her home when she was in
  her early 20s; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Werlein was joined in matrimony to Judge Ewing
  Werlein in 1935, and they became the parents of Kittredge, Elaine,
  and Ewing Werlein, Jr.; this devoted wife and mother eventually
  welcomed five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren into the
  family; and
         WHEREAS, Blessed with a lovely voice, Mrs. Werlein sang a
  number of times with the Houston Symphony Orchestra; additionally,
  her performances of a familiar Irish ballad became so popular that
  she won the nickname "the Danny Boy Girl"; and
         WHEREAS, This woman of great faith is a valued longtime
  member of First United Methodist, where she has served in myriad
  capacities; for many decades, she was the featured contralto
  soloist at the church, and the beautiful needlepoint that adorns
  the altar chairs and the kneeling rails is a tribute to her
  dedication as well as to her artistry; and
         WHEREAS, Evelyn Werlein has contributed greatly to the lives
  of her family and many friends through her grace and loving nature,
  and she continues to inspire all who are privileged to know her;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby congratulate Evelyn Ruth Werlein on the joyous occasion of
  her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for
  continued happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Werlein as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
