HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The late Roxie M. Fine of Orange Grove was an
inspiration to numerous people, especially her Family, Career, and
Community Leaders of America students at Orange Grove High School,
and following her diagnosis with Stage IV unknown cancer in June
2008, FCCLA students organized a project called A "FINE" Cause for
Unknown Cancer to raise awareness of the disease; and
WHEREAS, Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) origin is diagnosed
when metastatic cancer is found but the primary site of the cancer
cannot be determined; about two to four percent of all cancer
patients have a cancer whose primary site is never found, making it
difficult for doctors to plan the best treatment; and
WHEREAS, In their efforts to educate others about CUP, FCCLA
students realized that the disease was not represented by a
specific ribbon color, as are other forms of cancer, and they took
up the challenge of creating and implementing a CUP ribbon; they
ultimately chose a zebra stripe ribbon to reflect both Ms. Fine's
dynamic personality and the uniqueness of this particular form of
  cancer; and
WHEREAS, Although their beloved teacher passed away on
December 2, 2008, FCCLA students have continued their campaign to
educate others about CUP; they raised nearly $28,000 at the Walk for
a "FINE" Cause, which they hosted on December 11, and subsequently
donated the funds to CUP research at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in
  Houston; and
WHEREAS, Orange Grove High School FCCLA students are
channeling their grief over Roxie Fine into making a positive
difference in the fight against unknown cancer, and they have set an
outstanding example of teamwork and generosity to which all may
  aspire; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby commend Orange Grove High School Family, Career, and
Community Leaders of America students for their efforts to raise
awareness of cancer of unknown primary (CUP) origin and for
choosing zebra stripes as the ribbon color to symbolize this rare
form of cancer; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Orange Grove High School as an expression of high
regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
