CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, Jennifer McGrew has been honored by the YWCA of
  Lubbock with a Women of Excellence Youth Leadership Award, and her
  selection for this tribute is most fitting; and
         WHEREAS, The Women of Excellence Award was created in 1989 to
  emphasize the vital roles that women play in both the civic and
  professional worlds, honoring women for their achievements and for
  their contributions to the community as leaders and volunteers; and
         WHEREAS, Ranked second in her senior class at Estacado High
  School, Jennifer McGrew has earned multiple top-student awards
  while participating in Lubbock Independent School District's
  medical magnet program, studying toward her long-term goal of
  becoming a neurosurgeon by taking classes in such courses as health
  science technology, anatomy and physiology, and pathology and by
  working as an unpaid intern; and
         WHEREAS, Becoming a member of the Estacado Academic Decathlon
  team as a sophomore, Ms. McGrew placed second in interview among
  honors students in the UIL competition; at the regional level, she
  finished in the top three in art, language, math, science,
  economics, speech, super quiz, and interview; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. McGrew has been drum major for Estacado's band
  for three years, and she plays the trumpet, saxophone, and flute;
  her love of music has led her to volunteer in the music department
  at elementary schools, where she nurtures the skills and interests
  of younger students; and
         WHEREAS, Her extracurricular participation includes a number
  of leadership roles; she has served as National Honor Society
  treasurer, elected band representative, and Health Occupations
  Students of America class representative; her outstanding efforts
  led her to become one of 13 high school seniors in Lubbock County to
  receive the Good Citizens Award for outstanding qualities of
  dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism from the Nancy
  Anderson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; and
         WHEREAS, Following the example of her mother, the late Robbie
  McGrew, Ms. McGrew places great importance on community service,
  volunteering as an Iles Elementary librarian aide, assisting with
  Nightmare on 19th Street, working for Habitat for Humanity, and
  helping to organize several blood drives; and
         WHEREAS, With her receipt of a Women of Excellence Award,
  Jennifer McGrew joins an elite group of women who have been honored
  by the YWCA of Lubbock; distinguished by her intelligence,
  determination, and talent, she is indeed a worthy role model for
  this and future generations; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby congratulate Jennifer McGrew on receiving a 2009 Women of
  Excellence Award from the YWCA of Lubbock and extend to her sincere
  best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. McGrew as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives and Senate.
