H.C.R. No. 164
 
 
 
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, Proud residents of Delta County are gathering in
  Austin on April 21, 2009, to celebrate Delta County Day at the State
  Capitol; and
         WHEREAS, Situated amid the rich Blackland Prairie grasslands
  between the north and south forks of the Sulphur River, Delta County
  was first inhabited by the Caddo Indians; a French explorer,
  Francois Hervey, visited the area in 1750; and
         WHEREAS, The county's first Anglo-American settler, Hugh
  Castle, settled in the region in the 1820s, followed by other
  settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky; in 1870, the area was
  organized into Delta County and named for its triangular shape,
  which resembles the Greek letter delta; Cooper is the county seat;
  and
         WHEREAS, The fertile soil of the county yielded large
  harvests of corn and cotton during the 1800s; over the years,
  ranching also became a vital part of the county's economy, and
  today, beef cattle, hay, soybeans, wheat, and cotton are the chief
  agricultural products; and
         WHEREAS, In 2009, Delta County has been ranked as 22nd in the
  list of the top 100 best places to live in the Southwest by
  Progressive Farmer magazine; the county's fine opportunities for
  recreation include Cooper Lake State Park, where visitors may enjoy
  boating, fishing, hiking, and camping; and
         WHEREAS, The Patterson Memorial Delta County Museum in the
  old Texas-Midland Railroad depot in Cooper exhibits artifacts and
  memorabilia from the county's early days, while Cooper's
  picturesque downtown features Miller Drug, with its old-fashioned
  soda counter and vintage Wurlitzer jukebox; visitors and residents
  alike enjoy the annual Chiggerfest in October, the Cooper Lake Bass
  Classic fishing competition, and the Delta County Fair in April;
  and
         WHEREAS, The citizens of Delta County are justly proud of
  their agricultural heritage, their rural lifestyle, and their
  good-neighbor values, and it is indeed a pleasure to celebrate this
  unique region of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby designate April 21, 2009, as Delta County Day at the State
  Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best wishes
  for a memorable and meaningful stay in Austin.
