CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, Family, friends, and community members are mourning
  the loss of Odessa City Council member Michael Sanchez, who died on
  March 18, 2009, at the age of 40; and
         WHEREAS, Mike Sanchez was born in Wichita Falls on November
  15, 1968, and was a 1987 graduate of Odessa High School, where he
  was a member of the National Honor Society and a competitive member
  of the golf team; he went on to attend Odessa College, Texas Tech
  University, and The University of Texas at Austin; and
         WHEREAS, In 2006, Mr. Sanchez was elected to the Odessa City
  Council for District 5, serving on the Animal Control Advisory
  Board, the Main Street Odessa Board, the Gas Committee, and the
  Personnel Policy Committee; in 2008, he was elected as mayor pro
  tem; and
         WHEREAS, This compassionate and dedicated public servant
  committed himself to ensuring affordable housing for the people of
  Odessa, and he played an instrumental role in gaining tax credits
  for the Key West Senior Village; he also helped revise the city's
  personnel policies and procedures manual; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Sanchez was active with the Texas Municipal
  League, and he was a member of the TML's Association of Hispanic
  Municipal Officials, becoming the organization's treasurer in
  2007; he was a member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic
  Church; and
         WHEREAS, Above all, Mike Sanchez was a loving father to his
  daughters, Marissa, Mariela, and Marisol, teaching them how to ride
  a bicycle and how to drive, supporting their school activities,
  introducing them to Aggies football, and taking them on trips
  around the state and across the nation; and
         WHEREAS, Although he was taken much too soon, Mike Sanchez
  leaves behind him a legacy of public service, compassion for
  others, and devotion to family, and his memory will forever be held
  close in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby pay tribute to the life of Michael Sanchez and extend sincere
  condolences to the members of his family: to his daughters, Marissa
  Sanchez, Marisol Sanchez, and Mariela Sanchez; to his father, Angel
  Sanchez; to his mother, Diana Chavez, and her husband, Raymond; to
  his grandmother, Mary Cadena; to his sister, Monica Sanchez; to his
  brother, Steve Chavez; to his stepsister, Reisa Chavez; to his
  stepbrothers, Raymond Chavez, Jr., and Paul Chavez; to his aunts,
  Olga Quiroz, Annabelle Sanchez, Gracie Cadena, Mary Cooper, and
  Cecilia Kennedy; to his uncles, John Joe Cadena, Ray Sanchez, Joe
  Sanchez, Johnny Sanchez, Mike Sanchez, and Rudy Sanchez; and to his
  other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
  Michael Sanchez.
