R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Emil Habecker III of Comfort passed away on December
  13, 2007, at the age of 78, leaving his family and friends with many
  treasured memories of time spent in his company; and
         WHEREAS, Born into a Kerr County family, Emil Habecker was a
  navy equipment specialist as well as a diver for the Scripps
  Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San
  Diego, one of the oldest, largest, and most prestigious centers for
  marine science research, graduate training, and public service in
  the world; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Habecker's friendship with other early divers
  led to his participation in the San Diego Bottom Scratchers Club,
  reportedly the oldest free-diving club in the United States;
  organized in 1933, the Bottom Scratchers acquired their name from
  their practice of "scratching" the ocean floor in search of food
  during the Great Depression; the divers were pioneers in developing
  and refining equipment for spearfishing and sport diving, both of
  which were in their infancy at that time; and
         WHEREAS, In the late 1950s, Mr. Habecker was invited to join a
  group of Scripps graduate students/alumni and associates who had
  formed a corporation named Scientific Diving Consultants, Inc., for
  the purpose of studying sea life; in 1959, the corporation opened
  the Diving Locker, a San Diego dive shop; during his years in
  California he was also affiliated with the San Diego Underwater
  Photographic Society; and
         WHEREAS, After returning to live in the Texas Hill Country,
  Mr. Habecker became involved in the Comfort Lions Club and the
  Comfort Athletic Booster Club, which now awards a $1,000 Emil
  Habecker Scholarship in honor of this esteemed gentleman; and
         WHEREAS, With his beloved wife, Marcia, Mr. Habecker shared a
  fulfilling marriage that was further enriched with the addition of
  two children and a grandchild; and
         WHEREAS, Emil Habecker lived a caring and purposeful life,
  and he is greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby honor the memory of Emil Habecker III and extend
  sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Marcia
  Anderson Habecker; to his daughter, Cheryle Habecker Sackett, and
  her husband, Vernon Barnard; to his son, Ron Habecker; to his
  stepsiblings, Madeline Behal, Frank Habecker, and Max Habecker and
  his wife, Alma; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House
  of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Emil
  Habecker III.
