R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Vietnamese American residents of the Lone Star State
  are gathering on January 26, 2009, to begin their celebration of Tet
  Nguyen Dan, the Vietnamese New Year; and
         WHEREAS, Recognized as the beginning of spring as well as the
  start of a new year on the lunar calendar, Tet Nguyen Dan, or simply
  "Tet," is a time of renewal in which revelers beckon good fortune
  for the coming year; and
         WHEREAS, Traditional celebrations can extend over several
  days and feature a variety of rich customs, which include
  displaying red decorations for luck, welcoming auspicious guests
  into the home, and donning new clothing to represent the
  rejuvenating spirit of the holiday; and
         WHEREAS, Food and family are central to the Tet festivities;
  individuals gather with their loved ones to share special dishes
  that mark the occasion and to exchange gifts; relatives who have
  passed on are also remembered during this time, and they are honored
  with cemetery visits and other rituals; and
         WHEREAS, Tet Nguyen Dan is an important part of life for
  Americans who trace their ancestry to Southeast Asia, and this
  cherished holiday provides a fitting opportunity to recognize the
  many ways in which the Vietnamese community contributes to the
  State of Texas; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate Tet Nguyen Dan and extend to the
  Texas residents of Vietnamese heritage sincere best wishes for a
  memorable celebration.
