R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Citizens from Denton County are gathering in Austin |
|
on February 9-10, 2009, to celebrate Denton County Days at the State |
|
Capitol; and |
|
WHEREAS, Located in North Texas, Denton County is bordered to |
|
the east by Collin County and to the northeast by Grayson County, |
|
and residents of all three are also commemorating Tri-County Days |
|
at the State Capitol; and |
|
WHEREAS, Denton County was created by the Texas Legislature |
|
in 1846 and named for pioneer preacher, lawyer, and soldier John |
|
Bunyan Denton; the early years of the county saw its emergence as an |
|
agricultural center, and the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s |
|
ensured that the area's wheat and cotton would find distribution |
|
across the country; and |
|
WHEREAS, The county is home to the University of North Texas |
|
and Texas Woman's University, which were founded as Texas Normal |
|
College and Girls' Industrial College in 1890 and 1903, |
|
respectively, as well as a campus of North Central Texas College, |
|
and the alumni of these schools have gone on to make their mark on |
|
the history of Texas and the nation; and |
|
WHEREAS, Further attractions in the Denton area include the |
|
beauty of the North Texas Greenbelt, the architecture of the Denton |
|
County Courthouse-on-the-Square, and the action of the Texas Motor |
|
Speedway; and |
|
WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history even as they work to |
|
build a bright future, the citizens of Denton County are |
|
justifiably proud of their community, and it is most fitting to take |
|
this opportunity to honor their contribution to the story of the |
|
Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize February 9-10, 2009, as Denton County |
|
Days at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the members of |
|
the visiting delegation for an enjoyable and memorable stay in |
|
Austin. |
